Course Details
Peter’s Axe hafting course (handle making and fitting) is run in a covered space in a woodland setting over two days. Campers are welcome to arrive from Friday evening and spend time around the fire, ready for a Saturday morning start.
Peter, from Soulwood Creations, will guide you through making your very own carving axe. On the first day you will learn about the right wood for axe handles, how to hang an axe head and carve a faceted ergonomic handle. In addition, an in depth discussion on what makes a functional tool handle which will allow you to create your own handles for your tools in the future.
On the second day Peter will introduce you to the fundamentals of leatherworking through making a custom sheath for your axe. These skills such as saddle stitching, edge finishing and dyeing will enable you to venture on to many different leather projects, if you wish to do so, in the future.
This course includes a hand forged axe head that Peter uses for his own axes. You will also learn how to sharpen your axe to a razor edge so you can return home with a perfect tool for all your future wood carving projects.
Catering:
For all courses, a hearty, healthy lunch is provided (please let your tutor know of any dietary requirements when booking), along with tea, coffee and water. Breakfast and evening meal is self-catered, with firewood and charcoal-based cooking available.
We also provide firewood, brew-kit, washing up and cooking facilities, crockery and cutlery.
Guests should bring; barbecue food or pans for cooking on a fire for breakfast and evening meals.
Facilities:
Facilities include covered workshop spaces, an undercover outdoor cooking set-up, communal dining area, comfortable compost toilet, plenty of loo roll, and handwashing. A good stone track leads to the wood where there is space to park, please keep speed under 10mph.
Tutor Bio
Peter Kovacs is a craftsman originating from Hungary and lives and works in North Yorkshire as a full-time maker.
A furniture maker by trade, Peter also has deep knowledge of other crafts like green woodworking and leatherwork. The completion of his Product and Furniture design degree aided him to delve deeper into the understanding of his crafts and processes. In 2020, Peter made the decision to leave his career as a furniture designer and become a full-time toolmaker.
Peter applies a very analytical approach about what makes an outstanding tool and has the skills to be able to materialise these ideas.
